Position Summary:


Florida Atlantic University Police Department, a fully accredited agency is seeking qualified applicants for the position of police officer. The Florida Atlantic University Police are committed to providing protection for university students, visitors, faculty, staff and properties.  


Summary of responsibilities:


Provides safety and security presence for university property by application of conscientious vehicle, bicycle and foot patrol functions on a 12 hour shift basis.


Responds and investigates crimes reported, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, fires, safety hazards, fire and security alarms received and all other occurrences within the scope of the department's responsibilities and mission. Prepares departmental, county and state forms as required.


Enforces applicable University policies, State Criminal Code and Statutes governing state traffic laws. Issues appropriate citations, student referrals and/or effects arrests as necessary in the performance of these law enforcement duties.


Renders informational services to members of the University community and visitors, assists motorists experiencing vehicle problems, provides dignitary protection, and handles traffic control and parking directions for a variety of educational, cultural and athletic events held on campus.


Conducts security and safety checks of university buildings, student housing and university grounds. Provides a university crime prevention function through CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), active shooter training, and other safety related programs.


Performs all other duties as directed or as necessary which are similar and related assignments.


Ability to work in stressful and sometimes hazardous conditions.


Ability to safely operate a patrol vehicle and emergency equipment.


Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to grasp criminal and traffic laws and to make sound decisions.


Ability to exercise restraint and tact with all members of the University community and the general public.


Ability to physically and mentally satisfy state and departmental training requirements. Ability to effectively work without direct supervision. Ability to work well with fellow officers: teamwork concept.


Minimum Requirements:


Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943 of the Florida Statutes. 


Must be at least 19 years of age and a U.S. citizen and be able to pass physical and psychological examinations, a rigorous background investigation, and not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.


High school diploma or equivalent, certified or passed a state academy, and one year of law enforcement experience preferred.


“Candidates with a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree preferred but not required.”


Certified Applicants:


Must meet one of the requirements below:


Possess a valid Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Police Officer Certification. - Must provide copy of certification


Possess a certification from another Federal or State Law Enforcement agency and worked as a full-time police officer for at least one (1) year (excluding police academy training). -Must provide copy of certification prior to employment


Complete an Equivalency of Academy Training program approved by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement – must provide copy of certification prior to employment

Law Enforcement Officer - Non-Certified

Minimum Qualifications

Non-certified officer candidates will be required to attend a Florida Criminal Justice Entry Level Training Program (police academy) selected by the department. In addition to the department's established hiring criteria, candidates must meet all training center entrance requirements and maintain academic and performance standards throughout the course of study. Physical agility test required for all applicants. Possession of a valid State of Florida driver's license with no citations issued within the past three (3) years.

Police Communications Operator

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a certified Telecommunicator through the Florida Department of Health.

Must possess FCIC/NCIC Terminal Access Certification, CPR Certification, and ICS 100, 200, and 700 Certifications.

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Must have a valid Florida Driver's License.

Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

Hiring Process

Duties

Examples of work include but are not limited to the following:

Operate police and other radio systems; monitor alarm, access control, and camera systems; and dispatch officers and other emergency personnel as needed. Accurately document officer status, location, and activity.

Handle emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, prioritize calls, and channel pertinent information to officers and supervisory personnel. Make necessary emergency notification. Operate Criminal Justice Information Systems computer terminal to include inquiries and entering persons, vehicles, and property at the direction of officers.

Provide the public with assistance on complaints and informational services, lost and found property, bicycle registration, directions, fingerprinting, and other services. Use tact and discretion. Observe strict confidentiality rules. Direct persons to proper supervisory level as necessary.

Monitor messages directed to the department and information related to local criminal activity and officer safety.

Demonstrate knowledge of police terminology and procedures, Florida criminal and civil law, campus geography, and University policies and procedures pertaining to police operations.
